Last night’s by-election results are very indicative:
  • the Stoke-on-Trent result shows that, even in ‘Brexit heartland’, Brexit was not a vote for extremism
  • Labour under Corbyn by not holding on to Copeland, a seat it won in the General Election, is a party that is in a cul-de-sac.
  • most importantly, the Tories will divide and rule in the absence of a centre-left coalition.
My fear is that the UK will be in for another 5 years of Tory government unless the Labour Party – MPs & members – wake up to the fact that their party can not cover the current span of opinions within in itself. The only future for the Labour Party is to split. For the sake of both itself and the country, it needs to do this sooner rather than later.
