Go Home

Last year it was ‘Go Home’ poster vans cruising our streets, yesterday came a package of miserly unpleasant Government proposals aimed at dealing with ‘the immigration problems’ facing the UK. According to The Institute for Public Policy research, when one takes into account the 2.2m Brits living abroad in the EU, the UK is only the 4th largest net recipient of EU immigrants (after Germany, Spain & France). I totally agree with the EU employment commissioner, who called David Cameron’s proposals “an unfortunate over-reaction….(which could result in the UK being)…the nasty country in Europe.” I am not against the UK having a proportionate and sensible immigration policy, but what was announced yesterday was indeed “nasty”. And if this is what the Tories believe is a vote-winning policy, what sort of country have we become?
